Sounds Of Taiwan: A Symphony By Bao Yuankai 聽見 臺灣

SATURDAY 2ND MARCH
FILM STARTS AT: 12 NOON

Director: Heather Tsui

This documentary retraces the musical journey of Chinese composer Bao Yuankai as Tsui follows him to various locations across Taiwan that inspired his acclaimed eight-movement symphony piece ‘Sketches of Taiwan’. Bao’s decades-long love affair with Taiwanese culture began in the 1990s when he visited the island as a guest professor. Hong Kong International Film Festival will host its international premiere in April, following its local theatrical release earlier this month. Tsui’s 2018 feature debut Long Time No Sea received a special jury prize at Seattle and best new performer prize at the Golden Horse Awards.

SATURDAY 2ND MARCH
•FILM STARTS AT: 4:00PM
•PANEL DISCUSSION AFETR FILM AT: 5:40PM

Director: Heather Tsui

Heather Tsui’s impressive debut tells an uplifting, family-friendly tale from the indigenous Tao community of Taiwan.
“Long Time No Sea” is based on Tsui’s experience with the Little Flying Fish Cultural Exhibition Dance Troupe and the Tao children on Orchid Island. The largely uplifting film provides much needed visibility to the Tao residents of Orchid Island who have called the island home for many centuries, and without being too grim, touches on the harsh reality of families forced to live apart due to financial constraints. Tsui employed Tao actors for an intimate look into the lives of the residents of Orchid Island. Both their music and language play a strong role in this film that is cinematic and deeply poetic.
